Apple researching virtual reality headsets

Apple's latest patent application reveals that they're continuing to look into personal virtual reality headsets. The February 2008 application is titled "Automatically adjusting media display in a personal display system" and details a "personal display system" which can give "the impression of being in the theater."

Apple suggests that by detecting the user's movements, the image could be adjusted accordingly:
For example, the device may detect a user's head movement and cause the portion of media displayed to reflect the head movement.

Apple even makes the point that they could take the realism so far as adding theatre surroundings, adjusting sound effects based on the user's "seat" and even adding outlines of other patrons sitting in the theatre.

Obama makes historic White House visit

WASHINGTON, Nov 10 (Reuters) - President-elect Barack Obama visited the White House on Monday for his first post-election meeting with President George W. Bush, a strikingly symbolic moment in the historic transition of power in Washington.

The outgoing president and first lady Laura Bush greeted Obama and his wife Michelle with smiles and handshakes as they stepped from their limousine to begin a tour of what will be their new home after Obama is sworn in on Jan. 20.

The two men were headed to the Oval Office where they were expected to discuss the global financial crisis, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and other challenges the Republican president will bequeath to his Democratic successor.

It was their first face-to-face encounter -- a visit steeped in symbolism -- following Obama's resounding victory over Republican John McCain in Tuesday's election, which will make him America's first black chief executive.

Obama, 47, had repeatedly attacked Bush's "failed policies" on the campaign trail and once said he had a lot to answer for after eight years in office. The Illinois senator swept to power campaigning on a theme of change -- specifically, change from the unpopular president's approach to economics and foreign affairs.

Obama's aides say after taking office he will likely move quickly to roll back Bush's executive orders that limit stem cell research and expand oil and gas drilling in some areas.

There was no outward sign of tension, however, as the Obamas began their White House visit.

Presidents-in-waiting traditionally make a trip to the White House between Election Day and inauguration but usually wait longer than Obama did.

He came calling after only six days, underscoring a sense of urgency in the transition process. It will be the first wartime transfer of presidential power in four decades and also comes as economic turmoil is shaking world markets. (Reporting by Matt Spetalnick, editing by David Alexander)

Britney Spears son hospitalized for food reaction

OS ANGELES (Reuters) - Pop star Britney Spears' 2-year-old son was taken to the hospital over the weekend after he had a reaction to something he ate, a statement on the singer's Web site said on Monday.

Jayden James was admitted to a Mississippi hospital during a visit by the singer and her two sons to her family home in Kentwood, Louisiana.

"Jayden James Federline was admitted to the Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center on Sunday, November 9th. Doctors concluded he had a reaction to something he ingested. He is expected to be discharged tomorrow (Tuesday)," said the statement from the Spears family posted on the official www.britneyspears.com Web site.

People magazine, quoting a source close to the family, said that Jayden had suffered "a terrible allergic reaction. He had hives, was itchy and irritable."

The source told the celebrity magazine that Jayden "is doing fine" and Spears, 26, and her mother, Lynne, spent Sunday night at the hospital with him.

Britain's Daily Mail newspaper had reported earlier that the toddler suffered an apparent seizure.

The trip by Spears to Louisiana, her childhood home, was the first time she had been allowed to leave California with sons Sean Preston, 3, and Jayden since their father Kevin Federline was given full custody in July.
